eARThHAMPTONS 2017, an Earth Day Friendly ART & DESIGN Weekend Celebration at historic Ashawagh Hall, will be held the weekend of April 21st through the 23rd.  In 2017, eARThHAMPTONS will include a strong and eclectic art exhibit, design elements, and the participation of local farms and purveyors.  Following last year’s tradition hosting talks such as a presentation on pesticide free lawns by Edwina von Gal, 2017 programming will also include panel discussions and talks of interest to a wide audience.“We are truly delighted with how well received and welcomed the event has become.  We look forward to continue growing an enjoyable way to combine all the elements that make up our habitats at large and bring more attention to sustainable practices in the art and design world as well as our everyday lives” comments organizer DeCanio who is particularly fond of the natural beauty found on the East End.

Pamela Willoughby, a Cultural Curator with vast experience in the art world procured and curated the artwork of prominent Springs artist, and one time assistant to Willem de Kooning, Athos Zacharias. Zacharias’ work will be on exhibit as a special feature at the event.  His paintings can be found in important collections including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Museum of Art in Providence, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.
The roster of accomplished artists participating will make for an exciting and eclectic show bringing a mix of styles and genres that range from classic tradition to contemporary art with an edgy bent.  Alongside Athos Zacharias, artists include the work of Anahi DeCanio, Peter Gumpel, Phyllis Chillingworth, Lori Horowitz, Alyssa Peek, and Lisa Petker Mintz.  Followed by a Unique Motion graphics video: “REBOOT”  and "REDRESS" a projection mapped motion graphics video by John Jinks,  viewed on the outside of Ashawagh Hall at dusk! Think very cool Drive-In Movie!

An invitational section of the show includes talented local artists, including artist and Art Groove organizer Geralyne Lewandowski, Charles Waller, Scott Bluedorn, Blair Seagram, Christine Newman, Gia Schifano, Nicole Barylski, Carl Scorza, Anu Annam, Nicole Passman, Martha McAleer, Live Thiers, Cynthia Sobel and Palm Beach artist and curator Elayna Toby Singer. These artists will be displaying one work each, adding additional media, techniques, and visual interest.

This year’s event includes a sister show at the William Ris Gallery in Jamesport entitled eARThNOFO.  In addition, owner and gallery director Mary Cantone will bring select works from her gallery to the South Fork by participating in eARThHAMPTONS in East Hampton.  Her gallery has quickly become a strong contributor to the arts in the region, representing a stable of talented prominent artists and artisans.
Mary’s career in designing interiors and space planning has included collaborating with artists and clients to incorporate the fine arts into their lives. A bonus to Cantone’s innate and nurtured abilities is her keen sensibility for mixing mediums, styles and colors.  The gallery has been received to great success and has become a major contributor to the arts in the East End.  Her exhibits and art openings always bring in a crowd of art collectors and enthusiasts who have become loyal followers of the gallery.

Adding much excitement is the participation of acclaimed master craftsman and fine custom furniture designer Angel Naula. Naula will be contributing the Hamptons Stiletto Daybed, the latest version of his award-winning design as a special addition to the show Naula Workshop has collaborated with such acclaimed interior designers and architects and has completed high-profile residential projects for Robert Kennedy Jr., Hugh Jackman, Norah Jones, and Rupert Murdoch, among others.

Additionally, Naula created custom made pieces for the penthouse exquisitely designed by Kelly Behun for architect Rafael Viῆoly’s 432 Park Avenue.  Naula will be participating in upcoming BKLYN DESIGNS designing the VIP lounge with high end furniture pieces and artwork from Ms. DeCanio. Naula’s work has been featured in such notable venues as Esquire SoHo, Pulse Contemporary Art, Maison de Luxe Beverly Hills, Elle Décor, New York Magazine, The New York Times, and the Hamptons Designer Showhouse.  Besides his prominent role in the world of luxury design, Naula is a constant contributor to several numerous charities, including Design on a Dime. Stark Carpet is contributing to the event by providing a rug as a floor design element to offset the Hamptons Stiletto Daybed.

Following last year’s format, there will be additional programs and events throughout the weekend. On Friday evening, the show will host a special broadcast of the 2017 Wealth Report created by a team of experts from Knight Frank Residential in collaboration with Douglas Elliman. The report is the industry’s leading publication on global prime property markets, wealth distribution and luxury trends.  The panel of experts discuss trends in art collecting, classic cars, and wine markets as well as real estate. The Wealth Report offers invaluable insight into global trends and what will impact personal assets in the years to come.

After the broadcast, a chat will be led by Dawn Watson, creator of Hamptons Party Girl and public relations manager for Douglas Elliman for the Hamptons and Long Island.  Anahi DeCanio has recently joined the Douglas Elliman team combining her Wall St. background and the same matchmaking and marketing skills she uses to put together eARThHAMPTONS to work with clients in the world of real estate.
On Sunday at 1 pm, Pamela Willoughby will be moderating a thought-provoking and informative talk in keeping with the weekend’s eco-friendly theme. Panelists will include Laura Rose Dailey and Katie Rose Leonard of Amber Waves Farm, Ella Snow, members from Share the Harvest Farm, and artist Scott Bluedorn.  A light lunch for invited guests will be served.

ADDITIONAL INFO on ARTISTS and PARTICIPANTS:

PETER GUMPEL
Peter is a trained architect fascinated by light, shadow and perspective and the resulting volumetric impact of the subject.  As a figurative water-colorist, he uses his medium to record what he sees going beyond simple documentation.  He uses factual rendition as a stimulus to create images that capture the essence of the scene or person.  Mr. Gumpel is currently serving as president of the Artists Alliance of East Hampton

PHYLLIS CHILLINGWORTH
Phyllis expresses her "love of Earth" in a group of oil paintings that capture the diverse energy
she experienced in Nova Scotia, Montana, Provence and in Montauk.  Phyllis paints both plein air
and from memory; her studio is in Montauk, NY.  The show will include elusive ocean watercolors
painted in Montauk. Phyllis is a graduate of The Institute of Design, IIT, Chicago and The School
of Art & Architecture, Yale. She has had three solo shows at Atlantic Gallery, NYC.

LORI HOROWITZ
Her “Nurture series” of papier mache sculptures, depict individuals in society and their interactions. “I seem to become somehow bonded to these individuals carefully exploring and interpreting their attitudes. Often unseen and unheard, we all contribute and make up this diverse and multi-faceted population. I appreciate the complexity of each piece, collapsing three dimensional pieces into 2 and 3-dimensional space.  I love the process of combining photography, wire, papier mache and painting. This innovative, figurative analysis is a socio/ psycho study created to bring light to the attention seekers and the overlooked of our society.”

ALYSSA PEEK
Alyssa Peek lives in NYC and the Hamptons with her husband she is a portrait and fine art photographer.  Prior to starting Peek Photography, she spent over twenty years working in the fashion industry and left to continue creating beautiful things through the lens of her camera.  Her original work brings a fresh and innovative perspective to traditional photography, always reflecting her love of abstract expressionism and modern art.  Images are either captured abstractly or modified in-camera or post-production where she artistically enhances the ordinary to make it extraordinary.  She works directly with interior designs to create custom sized pieces to fit their individual needs.

LISA PETKER MINTZ
Lisa’s paintings are autobiographical and focus on different places, people and life experiences.  The themes are personal but universal, death, love, divorce, marriage and children dominate the work.  Landscape and sense of place also play a  major role.  The act of picture making is a critical of the journey.  “I need to make beautiful, cohesive, and entertaining paintings.  I paint with the same intensity in which I live my life, but also maintain the naïve view that in today’s chaotic society there are moments in life that can be pure and beautiful.  Life is chaotic; I juggle so many different roles.  My working process is the same.  I juggle many different images and materials.  The process is trial and error until the conclusion is clear”

ANAHI  DECANIO
Anahi is an Uruguayan born NY artist who is deeply influenced by her surroundings, whether nature or the energy and patina on an urban wall.  Art imitating life, Ms. DeCanio’s work is characterized by a myriad of layers that reveal themselves with a bold voice or subtle whispers creating striking abstracts that are rich in texture and meaning.  Her life experience is as eclectic as her work.  With a Wall Street background and a life-long love of art and design, Anahi has recently joined the Douglas Elliman team as a perfect place to combine all those elements.

NAULA
Born in Cuenca, Ecuador, Angel Naula has spent nearly his entire life designing and fabricating custom furniture, apprenticing in his family’s own workshop until the age of six and building his first piece of furniture when he was just 13. Upon immigrating to the United States, Angel carried on the integrity, mastery, and craftsmanship instilled by his father, his grandfather, and the generations of furniture makers before them.
In 2002, Angel opened Naula Workshop and has since collaborated with such acclaimed interior designers and architects as Robin Wilson, Jamie Drake, Kelly Behun, Philip Gorrivan, and Mark Zeff. He has completed high-profile residential projects for Robert Kennedy Jr., Hugh Jackman, Norah Jones, and Rupert Murdoch, as well as commercial projects for Columbia Pictures, Mandarin Oriental NY, LaGuardia Airport, and various celebrated restaurants. His work has also been featured in such notable venues as Esquire SoHo, Pulse Contemporary Art, Maison de Luxe Beverly Hills, Elle Décor, The New York Times, and the Hampton Designer Showhouse.

WILLIAM RIS GALLERY
Mary Cantone recently opened William Ris East in Jamesport, New York on Long Island’s North Shore to continue the traditions of 50 year old William Ris Gallery in Stone Harbor.  Mary’s career in designing interiors and space planning has included collaborating with artists and encouraging clients to enhance, with passion, the fine arts. A bonus to Cantone’s innate and nurtured abilities is her keen sensibilities for mixing mediums, styles and colors.  The gallery has been received to great success and has a major contributor to the arts in the East End.  William Ris is located on Main Road, in Jamesport, NY – adjacent to the Sherwood House Vineyards Tasting Room.

eARThHAMPTONS 2016
The brainchild of artist Anahi DeCanio, creative director of ArtyZen Studios, eARThHAMPTONS will be an Earth Day ART & DESIGN Weekend Celebration at historic Ashawagh Hall.  The exhibit will showcase works from Josh Hadar - Dan Welden - Jim Gemake, Christine D'Addario, Lori Horowitz, Geralyne Lewandowski, Michele Dragonetti, Mary Milne, Idoline Duke, Charles Waller and Anahi DeCanio.  ZCI Woodworks  will be exhibiting beautiful benches and tables made from reclaimed lumber.

Edwina von Gal, will be presenting The PRFCT Landscape at 11 am on Sunday April 24th.  Principal of her eponymous landscape design firm since 1984, Edwina has created landscapes with a focus on simplicity and sustainability for private and public clients around the world.  A light lunch will be served courtesy of  The Terry Thompson Team at Douglas Elliman.

Much sought after Naula will be showing custom made furniture. One of the pieces on exhibit, is a specially made ottoman called the Time Capsule. Naula created with a core of reclaimed magazines to replace the wood structure that would otherwise be needed to build this type of furniture. The foundation for this idea is that many years from now, when magazines, paper publications, etc. are a thing of the past, this capsule project has recorded a moment in time from our generation for a future generation to one day discover.

Activities are planned throughout both days with local purveyors of the best natural products from the East End.  Meet award winning artists and artisans along with the best of local earth friendly vendors such as Hamptons Handpoured and upcycled vintage treasures from Garagiste Chic.  Perfect Earth Project is planning additional activities on the Ashawagh lawn.  Music will be provided by Job Potter.

In addition to outdoor vendors and Earth Day related activities, Toni Germie  Architecture and Design Representative of Benjamin Moore will be making a presentation on the Power of Color - Creating Healthy Living Environments. Interior designers in attendance can earn a Continuing Education Unit for this lecture which will also be of interest to the general public. Master printmaker Dan Welden will be making a presentation of eco-friendly non hazardous print making techniques.

Spring is a wonderful time of year to visit the area.  Gardens and fields will be flourishing but the shops and restaurants will be easier to navigate before the Summer crowds arrive.  This is a great weekend to feed your creative soul and enjoy the East End. Ashawagh Hall is just a few miles from the center of town and the famous home of artists Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner.

eARThHAMPTONS  Art Opening Reception will take place on Saturday April 23rd from 6 to 9.  Esteemed
Guild Hall will be holding the opening of their annual Members Show on the same day from 4 to 6 pm leaving visitors with plenty of time to stop by Ashawagh Hall before or afterwards.  Some of our artists will also be participating in the Guild Hall exhibit.
eARThHAMPTONS will be open from 10 AM  to 9 PM on Saturday and 10 AM to 5 PM on Sunday.
